Purge (key)

Post by explosivepotato »

So it's been a while.

Almost ten years, I think.

A lot of my childhood was spent playing Purge, and I was waxing nostalgic and am trying to get a few friends together and play it again over LAN. I was wondering if anyone still had the keygen, as if I recall correctly, it was distributed through the purge14 forums, which are now defunct.

Thanks.

I have no clue where you could get a key for Purge.... We only deal with the FVF Quake mod here (which only has a Purge Mode).

And even the Quake server has been down lately.... Wonder what's up with Foq (the server host).

Heh, I asked Hap (creator of Purge) about it, and even he doesn't know where you could get a key anymore....

Hap was moved by your nostalgia, and he searched through his backups and found a keygen program....

But he said he doesn't even remember writing it, and it may not work, and he doesn't remember how to make it work, and it may crash your computer, so use it at your own risk and do not ever, ever distribute it to anyone else, ever.

I'll send you a PM with a link! ;-)

Oh my lord.

This is exactly the program I remember being distributed on the forums.

Thank you and Hap so much for this, it means a lot.

The key generator use some inline Assembly to generate the key. It makes it a more complex algo. As far as I know, until I put it out, no hacking group ever reverse-engineered the keygen. But that Assembly probably triggers the malware detector.

It's got a Wikipedia article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purge_(video_game)

And some old reviews.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/04/29/purge-review

https://web.archive.org/web/20121012150 ... w-6025281/

"During the heyday of the original Quake in 1996 and 1997, several Quake mods rose to prominence. These included the first ever team-based first-person shooters, including the Lithium CTF mod, Team Fortress, and Future vs. Fantasy. In fact, Future vs. Fantasy was one of the most original and popular Quake mods available at the time, pitting several high-tech classes against characters pulled from the fantasy genre. The creators of Future vs. Fantasy have now released an updated version of their game on the more modern Lithtech engine, changing the name to Purge but keeping much of the vision and design from the original game intact. More than six years after the initial release of Future vs. Fantasy for Quake, Purge still offers gameplay that is fairly unique."

...

Why don't we have a Wikipedia article?

Speaking of the origins of Purge (sort of), my first experience with FvF was trying to connect to a server running FvF with the maps. Probably back in '96? I didn't have the mod, so I couldn't get in, only chat. But I always wanted to try it. Then, years later, I found Gunter's revival effort, and I finally got to play.

So you see, dreams can come true :P

If it was 96, then they may have been running custom maps but not the official FvF maps from Fvf4. FvF4 didn't happen until... later than 96. In 96 FvF was still running like versions 1 or something. Definitely not later than 2.09, because after that, the download was mandatory. Maybe the year was later than you thought, and they were running something later than 2.09.

The first time I connected to an FvF server back in probably 97, I was randomly given the Mage class, and I was like, "wow, neat, my gun is a lightning bolt. I guess they just give everyone one of these...." And I went around shooting people with lightning and saw other people with weird guns and all that crazy stuff.... It was fun, so I kept going back to that server. That was before the Monk class was even a thing.

We are off topic. Maybe there's a better topic for this discussion. fine it and we can move these posts over there :D

Dunno, man. I first assumed 1997 but then I checked the release date.

Maybe create a FvF Nostalgia thread? Up to you.
